A river in the balance (editorial)
-
On Monday, crews began demolishing the Penobscot River’s Veazie Dam. It marked an important moment for sea-run fish, efforts to restore a complex habitat and unlikely partnerships. The day was notable not only for the state but also for the nation: The dam breaching is part of one of the largest river restoration projects in the country’s history.

Atlantic Salmon Recovery Proposal Guidelines
-
(Note: This is not a funding proposal).
This is an interim template for proposing Atlantic salmon related projects within the Gulf of Maine DPS. Proposals may be required if a project proponent is requesting Atlantic salmon to conduct a study, or requesting agency support or resources. The GOM DPS is divided into 3 Salmon Habitat Recovery Units (SHRUs). Each SHRU is managed by a team under the Atlantic salmon program's Collaborative Management Strategy (CMS). Project proponents should first discuss their project with the appropriate SHRU Team or, if a project is not specific to a SHRU, the project proponent should first contact that CMS's administrative coordinator. For information on project proposals contact: Dan Kircheis at Dan.Kircheis@noaa.gov (CMS administrative Coordinator)

Climate Change Vulnerability Index for Northeast species
-
NatureServe and Heritage Program collaborators have developed a Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) to provide a rapid, scientifically defensible assessment of species' vulnerability to climate change. The CCVI integrates information about exposure to altered climates and species-specific sensitivity factors known to be associated with vulnerability to climate change. This project applied the CCVI to 64 species selected in collaboration with state wildlife staff and other experts.

Coastal Update to the National Wetlands Inventory
-
This project completed a rapid update for wetland mapping in 162 coastal areas (1:24,000 topographic quadrangles in ME, MD, MA, NJ, NY, PA, and VA) that were last updated prior to 2000. The updates, which were incorporated into the National Wetland Inventory, have many applications in conservation analysis and coastal planning, including the Designing Sustainable Landscapes project (also funded by the North Atlantic LCC).
