Downeast Salmon Federation Releases Over 140,000 Atlantic Salmon into the East Machias River

The Downeast Salmon Federation has just released over 140,000 juvenile Atlantic salmon, called fall parr, throughout the East Machias River watershed. These juvenile salmon were released into many streams and throughout the mainstem of the river in an effort to restore the once great run of Atlantic salmon to the East Machias River. These fish were raised at the Peter Gray Hatchery located in East Machias at the East Machias Aquatic Research Center (EMARC).

This instruction guide is meant to help in completing the Stream Crossing Programmatic Notification Form *. The form is to be completed by an applicant to notify all relevant Federal agencies of the applicant’s intention to remove, install, replace or repair a stream crossing located within the areas of Maine that are important to the recovery of the Gulf of Maine Distinct Population Segment of Atlantic salmon, which is listed as endangered by the Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). This form is part of a streamlined U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) permitting and ESA section 7 consultation process that is applicable only to stream crossing work that meets the criteria for natural and sustainable design embodied in the U.S. Forest Service’s document, Stream Simulation: An Ecological Approach to Providing Passage for Aquatic Organisms at Road-Stream Crossings,

Jed Wright, the former Project Leader at the Gulf of Maine Coastal Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was instrumental in this accomplishment. His technical expertise in Stream Simulation design, wide-reaching partnerships, and never-ending enthusiasm were invaluable in seeing this effort through to completion. Jed’s conservation legacy in Maine will live on each time a stream crossing project is completed under this program.

Maine Fisheries Program Complex

The Maine Fisheries Program Complex (consisting of Craig Brook and Green Lake National Fish Hatcheries, and the Maine Fishery Resources Office) provides administrative oversight and technical support for a multi-faceted restoration and recovery program for Atlantic salmon and other anadromous fish and their habitats in Maine. The Complex administers strong science and adaptive management approaches for restoration and recovery, and initiates partnerships with other federal, state, tribal and private sector entities to leverage resource acccomplishments. The hatcheries within the Complex are its conservation tools for river-specific broodstock and outplanting programs, and its Fishery Resources Office provides technical expertise for on-the-ground habitat and fish passage projects that are closely coordinated with an array of watershed partners. The Complex also oversees a popular educational outreach program that provides hands-on interpretive demonstrations, tours, and a highly successful "Salmon in Schools Program" for the people of Maine, with a host of supporting partners. About 40,000 people visit the Complex and its satellite facilities every year.
