Stream Smart Phase II is a field oriented technical workshop extension of the principles of Stream Smart design for ecological road crossings. Participants will learn how to assess a road/stream crossing, gathering the information needed to develop a conceptual design for a replacement open bottom stream crossing. Information gathered will include: a surveyed longitudinal profile, gradient, riffle/pool spacing, bankfull width measurements, cross sectional transects of a reference reach, and stream substrate composition. Following the “hands on” field portion of the workshop, participants will enter data and interpret the information. The end result will be a conceptual preliminary design for a Stream Smart crossing replacement structure. Stream Smart workshops are designed to provide training for professionals responsible for roadstream crossings. Participants in this workshop will receive continuing education credits for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Voluntary Contractor Certification Program.
