- ASF Explores High Mortality in Early Part of Migration
- St Andrews, N.B.— Top researchers with the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) are trying to figure out why wild Atlantic salmon numbers are dropping dramatically once they leave their home rivers and head into saltwater. Jonathan Carr, ASF’s Director of Research and Environment, recently presented his latest scientific findings at the Atlantic Salmon Ecosystems Forum in Orono, Maine. Scientists from across North America gathered to exchange information regarding the latest research on wild Atlantic salmon and their habitat.

- Natural Resources Conservation Service
- The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides leadership and technical assistance to address natural resource conservation issues on private land. NRCS employees work to improve and protect natural resources in partnership with Maine's 16 Soil and Water Conservation Districts, federal, state and local agencies, farmers, landowners and communities. The partnership's commitment to conservation provides a solid foundation to a locally-led program delivery system. The partnership is also committed to a voluntary, incentive-based approach to private land stewardship and conservation treatment.
- Salmon Habitat and River Enhancement
- SHARE is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) looking to restore fish passage and natural stream function to benefit Atlantic salmon and other native fishes. Since 2005, SHARE has improved or opened up a lot of previously inaccessible habitat – over 100 miles (2800+ habitat units). The majority of SHARE's work is within the Machias and Old Stream watersheds, as they've been recognized by biologists as some the highest priority for Atlantic salmon recovery.
- Diadromous Species Restoration Research Network
- The goal of DSRRN is to advance the science of diadromous fish restoration and promote state-of-the-art scientific approaches to multiple-species restoration through workshops, conferences, web sharing, and journal publications. DSRRN is a joint project of the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental & Watershed Research at the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine. Funding for the project was received from the National Science Foundation.
- Maine Audubon
- Maine Audubon works to conserve Maine's wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people of all ages in education, conservation, and action. The organization has worked extensively to keep free-flowing the upper St. John and portions of the Penobscot River. With a 160-year history, Maine Audubon is supported by 8,000 members, seven local chapters and more than 2,000 volunteers statewide.
- Trout Unlimited
- Trout Unlimited is a national conservation organization whose mission is to conserve, protect, and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. TU has an office in Augusta, with 8 chapters and over 1500 members in Maine. In 2002, they worked with the Sennebec Lake Association on the St. George River to replace an old dam with an innovative rock ramp that allowed free passage and maintained later water levels.

- The Nature Conservancy is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of biological diversity. On-the-ground conservation work is carried out in all 50 states and in 27 foreign countries and is supported by approximately one million individual The Nature Conservancy logo.members. The Conservancy has conserved nearly 15 million acres of land in the United States and Canada and more than 102 million acres with local partner organizations globally. The Conservancy owns and manages the largest private system of nature sanctuaries in the world. Projects increasingly seek to accommodate compatible human uses and benefits.
- Atlantic Salmon Federation
- The Atlantic Salmon Federation is dedicated to the conservation, protection and restoration of wild Atlantic salmon and the ecosystems on which their well-being and survival depend. ASF has a network of seven regional councils (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Maine and Western New England). The regional councils cover the freshwater range of the Atlantic salmon in Canada and the United States.
- Penobscot River Restoration Trust
- The Penobscot River Restoration Trust is the non-profit organization established for the purpose of implementing the core aspects of the Penobscot River Restoration Project, working in collaboration with PPL Corporation and federal and state agencies.
- Penobscot Indian Nation
- The Penobscot River is the ancestral home of the Penobscot Indian Nation. Restoration of the river's migratory fish stocks is necessary to comply with sustenance fishery rights guaranteed by the 1980 Maine Indian Land Claims Settlement Act and treaties between the Penobscot Nation, Massachusetts, and Maine. Penobscot tribal members have used the watershed and its abundant natural resources for physical and spiritual sustenance for 10,000-12,000 years.

- Downeast Salmon Federation's mission is to conserve wild Atlantic salmon and its habitat, restore a viable sports fishery and protect other important river, scenic, recreational and ecological resources in eastern Maine.

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is responsible for the stewardship of the nation's living marine resources and their habitat. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service recovers protected marine species (i.e. whales, turtles) without unnecessarily impeding economic and recreational opportunities.
