Vermont announces regional commitment to conserve forests across borders in face of climate change

Five New England governors, five eastern Canadian premiers, three major-multi-state and provincials forests and waterways. Those are the terms of a new resolution signed this week by regional leaders, acknowledging the need to work together to conserve shared resources in the face of climate change. 

A press release from the Vermont Office of the Governor explains that The Nature Conservancy in Vermont was instrumental in prioritizing the initiative and drafting the language of the resolution, as were biologists with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. The announcement also points to existing partnerships of government and nonprofit organizations that are leading the charge by actively working to sustain intact, connected natural landscapes in the region, including the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative and partners the Staying Connected Initiative, Two Countries, One Forest, and Atlantic Coast Joint Venture.
